CHALLANGE ACCEPTED!

Tonight, when I was reading Cecília Coelho’s blog (Box of Chocolates), I got to know about David Dodgson’s challenge which I thought it was really interesting. He proposed a “word cloud” from our blog, and what that would tell us about the content, vocabulary and our writing style. I was a little curious of what words would come up from my blog by the moment I typed my url at Wordle! So, I decided to take the challenge. As you can see, my word cloud is pretty simple and mixed up with some portuguese vocabulary because my intention is to teach English to Brazilian learners, so that, sometimes grammar explanations and some expressions are written in L1. I really enjoyed the experience and here is my conclusion about that:

Content – I could notice several names from publishers and authors which indicates that I am usually writing about their events, talks and conventions, and I really do it. I could also realize a great variety of words, and that makes me happy, because I do want to write about anything concerning teaching and learning, but I do need to focus more on those two topics.

Vocabulary -  I did not realize I was over-using the word ‘You’, that was a surprise. I believe that hapenned because  in many posts I use expressions like ‘see you around’, or ‘see you’ or anything like that. ‘The’, ‘to’, ‘and’ are also big words in my cloud, meaning I use them a lot too, so I will try to replace them for sinonyms when it is possible.

Surprises – I got surprised by two words. The first one was “You”, because of the fact I am over-using it and I had no idea about that. The other one was “pissed”. I was not expecting it because I had written that in my blog for the first time a few days ago, explaining the expression “pissed off”.

CAMBRIDGE DAY 2011–BERLIN

          If you are in Berlin or anywhere around it, you should not miss the next Cambridge Day event. It will be on November 12 (Saturday), from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.. There will be a great variety of workshops and presentations concerning the Cambridge ESOL Exams for teachers and language trainers. TOUCHABLE DREAMS

A great partnership between Jeremy Harmer and Steve Bingham resulted in a splendid poetry/music project called ‘Touchable Dreams’. While Jeremy recites the poems, Steve plays his awesome violin making the poems more lively, in a way you may have never seen before. That is pure poetry. If you usually use poems in the classroom to widen your students’ horizons, you might want to have it. For sure, your classes will be much more interesting and students will be touched by the dreams words can arouse. As a musician and a teacher that I am, I may confess, I’m not a ‘poetry guy’, but despite of that, one thing I do know is when something related to these two things (music & poetry) is well done, and in this case, I totally recommend it. COMO SE DIZ ‘ENCHER O SACO’ EM INGLÊS?

What’s up guys?
Quando uma pessoa ou coisa está te irritando, importunando e você não aguenta mais, utilizamos o termo ‘to piss off’. Em português, seria a conhecida expressão ‘encher o saco’. A origem dessa gíria é incerta, porém, teorias dizem que ela foi criada na II Guerra Mundial, quando o cachorro do Gen. Eisenhower urinou (pissed), em um mapa importante logo nos anos iniciais da guerra. Os oficiais que estavam presentes, brincaram, dizendo que os inimigos estavam ‘mijados’. Sim, ‘to piss’ é uma forma vulgar para ‘urinar’. A expressão, tem dois sentidos, veja abaixo:

This sound you are making is pissing me off!
Esse som que você está fazendo, tá me enchendo o saco!

The way she treats me really pisses me off!
O jeito que ela me trata, me deixa muito irritado!

E quando usamos o verbo ‘to piss’ no particípio (pissed), o significado muda para ‘muito irritado’, ‘p… da vida!’, ‘querendo matar um a qualquer custo’, confira:

That dude over there stole my girlfriend. I'm so pissed off!
Aquele cara ali roubou minha namorada. Estou muito p…!

He was really pissed off, when he saw his friends going away.
Ele ficou muito p…, quando viu seus amigos indo embora.

Vale lembrar que o Longman Contemporary English Dictionary, classifica o termo ‘to piss off’ como: Spoken, not polite, ou seja, linguagem falada, não educada, vulgar.

DISAL SPECIAL DAY 2011 - RECIFE

         

          A Disal estreou em Recife em grande estilo, trazendo um dos maiores especialistas em Língua Inglesa para Recife. Estou falando de Jack Scholes, pós-graduado em Educação e Ensino de Inglês como Língua Estrangeira pela Universidade de Londres. É famoso por tratar de forma bem-humorada o ensino de inglês em seus livros. Seu talento e bom humor, rendeu umas visitas ao Programa do Jô e entrevistas sempre bem-humoradas! Entre os títulos lançados estão: Easy Way - Modern Slang, Slang - Gírias Atuais do Inglês, e readers como Guitar Glory e seu mais novo livro The Coconut Seller (não disponível ainda no Brasil), mas, tivemos a oportunidade de conhecê-lo em primeira mão na palestra de ontem. (Yesss!)
          Mr. Scholes começou o dia com a palestra Unlocking a Good Book - The Key to Extensive Reading, uma aula de como motivar nossos alunos a lerem mais, abordando a leitura de uma maneira prazerosa, sem a necessidade da especificidade geralmente cobrada nas salas de aula. Em sua segunda palestra Teaching Slang Rocks!, Mr. Scholes apresentou os motivos pelos quais ensinar gírias é válido, o porquê e como ensinar, além de interagir com todos que estavam presentes. Aprendemos o significado de palavras como spuds, peckish, entre muitas outras. A palestra foi bem divertida, esclarecedora, e aberta para quem tivesse alguma dúvida. Alguns dos termos usados por Katy Perry em sua música:

• Cave in – Desmoronar (One blow from caving in)
• Six feet under – À sete palmos (Six feet under scream) Expressão usada quando queremos dizer que uma pessoa morreu e que está enterrada. Não seria à seis palmos? Não. O numeral usado na expressão equivalente na língua portuguesa é o 7(sete). Ex.  Joaquim está à sete palmos.  Há também uma série muito famosa nos EUA chamada Six Feet Under. Trata-se de uma família que tem como seu sustento principal, uma funerária. Creepy!
• a thing – Nada. (But no one seems to hear a thing) -Quando “a thing” é colocado após os pronomes indefinidos no one, nobody e em uma frase negativa, o seu significado também passa a ser negativo, traduzido geralmente por nada. Ex.  Nobody said a thing to him! – Ninguém disse nada a ele. He doesn’t know a thing about geometry – Ele não sabe nada de geometria. / I don’t wanna miss a thing – Eu não quero perder nada (Música da banda Aerosmith). Existem outras maneiras de usar a expressão “a thing” que abordaremos mais adiante aqui no blog.
• gotta/gonna (You just gotta ignite the light / You’re gonna leave them falling down) – Abreviação de “have got to” e “going to”. Ex. I’ve got to go home = I gotta go home. / I’m going to wake you up at 7 a.m. = I’m gonna wake you up at 7 a.m. .
• to let it through – Aceitar, admitir, “deixar rolar”. (And now it’s time to let it through).
• awe – ( You’re gonna leave them all in awe-awe-awe) – Você deixará todos eles aterrorizados/surpresos!

SMART PEOPLE USE SMART LIBRARIES

Uma iniciativa da Associação de bibliotecas da Irlanda (Library Association of Ireland) está servindo de exemplo para todo o mundo. The Library Ireland Week ou A Semana da Biblioteca na Irlanda, foi criada para incentivar a leitura entre os jovens utilizando não apenas os livros convencionais, mas também, os dispositivos eletrônicos como os e-readers. A campanha está no seu 6º ano e o tema escolhido foi: Pessoas Inteligentes Usam Bibliotecas Inteligentes (Smart People Use Smart Libraries). A semana vai de 07 (hoje) ao dia 13 de março (domingo) e apresenta em sua programação mais de 300 palestras espalhadas pelas diversas bibliotecas na Irlanda. HOORAY! IT’S CARNIVAL!

Is carnival a traditional festive season where you are from? Here it is, and I’m talking about Recife, Pernambuco. In this time of the year, lots of people from around the globe, come to the city to witness one of the greatest carnival parties ever! Frevo is the main rhythm, and it is represented by colorful umbrellas and frevo dancers:

According to The Guiness Book, Recife hosts the largest carnival parade in the world, called Galo da Madrugada (The Daybreak Rooster).

There are a lot of street carnival groups, or carnival blocos going around the city. Olinda is also known for its churches, the rich and popular culture! You can find lots of churches walking on the slopes of Olinda! Its carnival is simply unique! In 1982, UNESCO gave to Olinda the title of World Cultural Heritage. If you have never been to it, come visit and you won’t regret!

A PIECE OF CAKE

A expressão a piece of cake, surgiu na segunda metade do século XIX em alguns estados da América do Norte, onde a escravidão ainda se fazia presente. Quando usamos o termo piece of cake, estamos nos referindo à uma situação fácil ou que exigiu pouco esforço, pouca dedicação. Como a expressão surgiu? A idéia do bolo associado à algo fácil, originou-se por volta de 1870, nas competições locais, onde os bolos eram dados como prêmio aos vencedores. Especificamente, nos estados escravistas dos Estados Unidos, havia uma tradição onde os escravos fariam um círculo ao redor de um bolo, como numa reunião, e assim, o casal mais bonito levaria a iguaria para casa. O primeiro registro escrito dessa expressão deu-se em 1936 pelo poeta Ogden Nash que escreveu: Her picture's in the papers now, and life's a piece of cake. Hoje, o termo é muito usado para descrever provas na escola, disputas amigáveis e desafios. Alguns exemplos:

You have prepared well, and you'll probably find the exam a piece of cake.

Você se preparou bem e provavelmente achará a prova muito fácil.

He thought the job interview would be a piece of cake. He was definitely mistaken about that!

Ele achou que a entrevista de emprego seria fácil. Estava definitivamente enganado sobre isso!
